Session A11: Enhancing statistical culture
DescriptionNowadays statistics appears in every area of our lives. Social or scientific news in media are supported by statistics worldwide, political, economic or even private decisions need to be based on statistics. Statistics can help businesses to improve their productivity, market position and competitiveness. It is not enough to have good statistics available, but it is essential to recognize the importance of statistics, the potential of their use, coupled with a proper interpretation of data. From a broader perspective statistical culture needs to include aspects which currently are not covered by EU legislation. Enhancing statistical culture supposes the involvement not only of statisticians but of users and other stakeholders as well. In addition to identifying additional criteria for statistical culture the session is devoted to potential contribution of Statistical Societies. The session also examines the role of universities and educational institutions in enhancing statistical literacy and what European Statistics itself should do for it.
