Prices increased by 2.3% in January

Consumer prices were 2.3% higher on average in January than a year earlier. The highest price rises in this period were measured for other goods including motor fuels as well as for alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

In January 2017 compared to January 2016:

Consumer prices increased by 2.3% on average. Food prices rose by 1.4%, within which the price of sugar by 15.3%, pork prices by 9.6%, cheese prices by 4.6% and the prices of seasonal food items (potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits) by 3.5%. The price of poultry meat was cut by 16.4% and that of eggs by 5.0%. A higher-than-average price rise of 6.9% was recorded for other goods (pharmaceutical products, motor fuels, household products and recreational goods), and, within this, consumers paid 15.2% more for motor fuels. The prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco went up by 2.5%, those of services by 1.4% and clothing and footwear prices by 1.0% on average. The prices of electricity, gas and other fuels increased slightly, by 0.1%. Consumers paid 0.4% less for consumer durables.

In January 2017 compared to December 2016:

Consumer prices were up by 0.4% on average. A price rise of 0.6% was recorded for food, within which 6.6% for seasonal food items, 2.2% for cheese, 1.6% for pork and 1.5% for bread. The price of poultry meat decreased by 12.9%, that of eggs by 5.6% and milk prices by 4.3%, the reason for which was the reduction of the VAT rate of these products to 5%. The highest price rise (1.7%) was measured for other goods, within which 3.3% for motor fuels. A higher-than-average price rise of 0.9% was recorded for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The prices of electricity, gas and other fuels as well as consumer durables increased slightly, by 0.1%. The prices of services were cut by 0.2%. Consumers paid 2.5% less for clothing and footwear.
