Prices up by 2.1%

Consumer prices were 2.1% higher on average in May 2017 than this time last year. The highest price rises over the past year were measured for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, as well as other goods, including motor fuels.

In May 2017 compared to May 2016:

Consumer prices increased by 2.1% on average. Food prices rose by 2.7%, within which the price of pork by 14.8%, sugar prices by 12.0%, the price of cheese by 7.3%, that of other meat preparations by 6.1% and bread prices by 4.5%. The price of poultry meat was cut by 15.7%. The highest price rise of 3.9% on average was recorded for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The price of other goods (pharmaceutical products, motor fuels, household products and recreational goods) also increased at a higher-than-average rate, by 2.8%, within which the price of motor fuels rose by 4.7%. Consumers paid on average 1.5% more for services, 0.7% more for electricity, gas and other fuels and 0.4% more for clothing and footwear. Consumer durables cost 0.3% less for consumers.

In May 2017 compared to April 2017:

Consumer prices increased by 0.2% on average. Food prices rose by 1.0%, within which the price of seasonal food items (potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits) by 4.9%, flour prices by 2.7%, pork prices by 2.6%, the price of pasta products by 2.2%, egg prices by 1.8%, edible oil prices by 1.6% and chocolate and cocoa prices by 1.0%. Out of the main groups of consumption the highest, 1.3% price rise was recorded for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Clothing and footwear prices were up by 1.1% and the price of consumer durables by 0.1%. The price of electricity, gas and other fuels was unchanged. The price of other goods decreased by 1.1%, within which that of motor fuels by 2.9%. Consumers paid 0.3% less for services.

In January–May 2017 compared to the same period of the previous year:

Consumer prices went up by 2.4% on average.
