Prices up by 2.6%

Consumer prices were 2.6% higher on average in August 2017 than this time last year. The highest price rises over the past year were measured for alcoholic beverages and tobacco as well as motor fuels and food.

In August 2017 compared to August 2016:

Consumer prices increased by 2.6% on average. Food prices rose by 3.2%, within which the price of butter by 12.5%, that of cheese by 10.8%, pork prices by 9.9%, the price of other meat preparations by 7.0%, coffee prices by 6.2% and sugar and bread prices both by 5.3%. The price of poultry meat was cut by 14.5%. The highest price rise of 5.8% on average was recorded for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The price of other goods (pharmaceutical products, motor fuels, household products and recreational goods) was up by 3.3% on average, within which that of motor fuels by 5.8%. Services prices rose by 1.8% and the prices of electricity, gas and other fuels by 0.7%, within which the price of firewood went up by 6.1%, while the prices of electricity, natural gas and purchased heat were unchanged. Consumers paid 0.3% more for clothing and footwear. Consumer durables cost 0.1% less for consumers.

In August 2017 compared to July 2017:

Consumer prices increased by 0.1% on average. Food prices were reduced by 0.5%, which was dominantly due to the 6.6% price decrease of seasonal food items (potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits). (Food prices excluding this group rose by 0.3% on average.) Butter became more expensive by 3.4%, cheese by 0.8% and edible oil by 0.6%. Out of the main groups of consumption the highest, 0.7% price increase was recorded for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The price of other goods became 0.6%, within which that of motor fuels 1.2% higher on average. 0.1% more was paid on average for consumer durables and services. The prices of electricity, gas and other fuels were unchanged. Consumers paid 1.3% less for clothing and footwear due to the summer sale.

In January–August 2017 compared to the same period of the previous year:

Consumer prices went up by 2.4% on average.
