Average yield of wheat continues to grow
7.2 million tonnes of ear cereals, 8.7% less than in the previous year, were produced in 2017 on a 10% smaller area. Apart from oats and triticale, average yields surpassed the previous year’s values. The average yield of wheat was merely 10 kilogrammes less per hectare than the record yield to date. The yield of barley was outstanding, 5,270 kilogrammes were produced per hectare.
The most substantial type of ear cereals in Hungary is wheat, which accounted for 73% of total ear cereals production in 2017 (this proportion was 71% in 2016). A 6.5% lower production of wheat was harvested in 2017 from a 7.9% smaller area than a year earlier; the average yield was 5,440 kilogrammes/hectare, the highest in Hungary since 1988. The average yield of wheat in 2017 was 15% higher than the average of the previous five years.
The harvested area of barley was 15% and its production 12% less than a year earlier, while the average yield per hectare went up by 3.5%. The average yield of 5,270 kilogrammes/hectare was over 19% more than the average of the years 2012–2016.
The harvested area of triticale was 21% smaller than one year earlier. The harvested production decreased by nearly a quarter and the average yield by 4.3%.
In the case of oats a 12% lower production was harvested than in the previous year, from a 7.2% smaller area than in 2016, so the average yield became 4.6% lower.
Rye was harvested on over 25 thousand hectares, a 1.8 thousand hectares smaller area than last year. The production was about the same as in 2016, the average yield rising by 7.4%.
