2.9% increase in tourism nights at accommodation establishments

In August 2018, the number of nights spent by international tourists declined by 0.2% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists grew by 5.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. Total gross revenues grew by 12% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments. In January–August 2018, commercial accommodation establishments saw a 4.0% growth in tourism nights and a 9.2% rise in gross revenues compared to the same period of 2017.

In August 2018, compared to the same month of the previous year:

The number of international tourist arrivals grew by 2.7% to nearly 740 thousand. The number of tourism nights they spent fell by 0.2% compared to the high base a year earlier but still exceeded 2 million. The number of tourism nights increased in hotels, boarding houses and community hostels and fell in bungalows and camping sites. In hotels accounting for 70% of tourism nights, the rate of growth was 0.8%. Foreigners spent every second tourism night in the Budapest-Central Danube Region, 3.4% more than in the same month of the previous year.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 5.6% and exceeded 870 thousand. The number of tourism nights they spent grew by 5.7% to nearly 2.5 million. The number of tourism nights increased in each type of accommodation and in all tourist regions except Lake Tisza. At Lake Balaton, which is the most popular region, accommodation establishments recorded 0.8% more tourism nights.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 2.0 percentage points to 75.8%.

The total gross revenue of accommodation establishments increased by 12% to HUF 63 billion at current prices; within this, accommodation fee revenues increased by 11% (to HUF 40 billion).

Széchenyi Recreation Card holders spent HUF 3.2 billion, 1.4% less in commercial accommodation establishments.

On 31 August 2018, compared to the same date of the previous year:

3,470 commercial accommodation establishments were in operation with 99 thousand available rooms and nearly 359 thousand bed-places. The number of rooms was almost unchanged and the number of bed-places decreased by 1.2%.

In January–August 2018, compared to the same period of the previous year:

The number of tourism nights grew by 4.0% to a total of more than 22 million in commercial accommodation establishments. Foreign guests spent 3.1 % more (10.7 million) and domestic guests 4.8% more (11.3 million) nights in commercial accommodation establishments.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 2.2 percentage points to 61.8%.

Total gross sales in commercial accommodation establishments grew by 9.2% at current prices to a total of HUF 340 billion. Within this, accommodation revenues increased by 7.4% to nearly HUF 203 billion.
