Number of tourism nights increased by 1.6% and sales revenues by 8.7%

In August 2019, the number of nights spent by international tourists increased by 2.3% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists by 1.0% compared to the same period of the previous year in commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalows and community hostels). Considering seasonal and calendar effects, the number of foreign tourism nights grew by 1.8% and of domestic tourism nights declined by 0.1%. Total gross sales revenues rose by 8.7% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments.

In August 2019, compared to the same month of the previous year:

The number of international tourist arrivals increased by 3.0% and of international tourism nights by 2.3%. 754 thousand guests spent nearly 2.1 million tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments. The number of the latter ones increased in the majority of accommodation types and regions. Foreign guests spent half of their tourism nights in Budapest and 19% at Lake Balaton.

Domestic arrivals and tourism nights were up 2.8% and 1.0% respectively to 915 thousand arrivals and 2.5 million tourism nights. The value of the latter indicator also increased in hotels, boarding houses and camping sites. As in the previous month, Balaton was the most popular region for domestic visitors, where they spent three times as many nights as in the second most popular region, Northern Hungary.

The occupancy rate of hotels was 76.5%.

Total gross sales revenues were up by 8.7% (to HUF 69 billion), within which accommodation fee revenues grew by 9.7% (to HUF 45 billion) at current prices.

With Széchenyi Recreation Card, cardholders paid a total of HUF 5.5 billion in commercial accommodation establishments, an increase of 65%.

On 31 August 2019, compared to the same date of the previous year:

115 units fewer, 3,419 commercial accommodation establishments were in operation with 99 thousand available rooms and 355 thousand bed-places.

In January–August 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year:

The number of tourism nights registered by commercial accommodation establishments decreased by 0.1% to a total of 22.1 million. International and domestic guests both spent 0.1% fewer tourism nights at commercial accommodation establishments (10.7 million and 11.4 million respectively).

Room occupancy in hotels was unchanged at 61.8%.

The total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments were HUF 368 billion, 8.1% more at current prices.
