Surplus on external trade in goods amounts to EUR 674 million in May

In May 2019, the export volume was 4.9% and the import volume 2.9% higher than in the same period of the previous year. The surplus was EUR 674 million, EUR 181 million more than in May 2018. In January–May 2019, the surplus on the balance of external trade in goods amounted to EUR 2.8 billion, EUR 351 million less than a year earlier.

In May 2019:

The value of exports amounted to EUR 9.4 billion (HUF 3,058 billion) and that of imports to EUR 8.8 billion (HUF 2,836 billion).

In May 2019 compared to a year earlier:

The value of exports rose by 4.6% and that of imports by 2.8% in EUR terms.

The surplus on external trade in goods was up by EUR 181 million. (The balance is EUR 4 million less than the value published in the first estimate.)

The forint (HUF) price level of external trade in goods increased by 2.5% in both imports and exports compared to the same month of the previous year. The terms of trade were unchanged. The forint exchange rate weakened by 2.7% against the euro and by 8.6% against the dollar.

Calculated at prices in May 2018, the exports of machinery and transport equipment grew by 9.2% and their imports by 4.5%. The exports of road vehicles rose by more than one-tenth and their imports slightly compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The growth on both export and import sides was due to changes in trade in passenger cars and the parts of motor vehicles. The exports and imports of telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment both increased by more than one-tenth. The growth of both the exports and the imports was due to changes in trade in the parts of telephone sets. In addition to this group of products, changes in the imports of apparatus for the transmission or reception of voice, images or other data and in the exports of car radio were also dominant. The exports and imports of electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances both slightly rose. The growth was due on export side to trade in switchboards for electric control or the distribution of electricity and on import side to trade in electronic integrated circuits.

The export volume of manufactured goods was down by 2.8%, while their imports grew by 0.7%.

The export volume of fuels and electric energy increased by 18% and their import volume by 6.9%, which was consistent in both exports and imports with changes mainly in trade in natural and manufactured gas.

The volume of exports of food, beverages and tobacco rose by 0.5% and the volume of their imports by 2.4%. The growths resulted from changes in the exports of cereals and cereal preparations and in the imports of meat and meat preparations.

The volume of exports to EU member states went up by 6.3% and that of imports from there by 0.9%. The surplus on external trade in goods increased by EUR 425 million and amounted to EUR 1.2 billion. These countries accounted for 82% of exports and 75% of imports.

In extra-EU trade, the volume of exports decreased by 1.3%, while that of imports grew by 9.8%. The balance of external trade in goods with this group of countries deteriorated by EUR 244 million and showed a deficit of EUR 499 million.

In January–May 2019:

The value of exports amounted to EUR 46.1 billion (HUF 14,722 billion) and that of imports to EUR 43.3 billion (HUF 13,829 billion).

In January–May 2019 compared to a year earlier:

The volume of exports rose by 5.0% and that of imports by 5.6%.

The surplus on the balance of external trade in goods went down by EUR 351 million and amounted to EUR 2.8 billion.

The forint price level of external trade in goods increased by 2.6% in exports and by 3.2% in imports compared to the first five months of the previous year. The terms of trade worsened by 0.6%. The forint depreciated by 2.5% against the euro and by 11% against the dollar.
