Surplus on external trade in goods amounts to EUR 60 million in August

In August 2019, the volume of exports was up by 3.3% and that of imports by 2.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. The surplus was EUR 60 million, the balance improving by EUR 122 million compared to August 2018. According to calendar-adjusted data, the export volume rose by 7.8% and the import volume by 6.1%. In January–August 2019, the surplus on the balance of external trade in goods amounted to EUR 3.3 billion, EUR 954 million less than a year earlier.

In August 2019:

The value of exports amounted to EUR 8.2 billion (HUF 2,663 billion) and that of imports to EUR 8.1 billion (HUF 2,643 billion).

In August 2019 compared to a year earlier:

The value of exports increased by 2.7% and that of imports by 1.2% in EUR terms.

The balance of external trade in goods improved by EUR 122 million. (The surplus is EUR 23 million more than the value published in the first estimate.)

The forint (HUF) price level of external trade in goods decreased by 0.6% in imports and went up by 0.6% in exports compared to the same month of the previous year. The terms of trade improved by 1.2%. The forint exchange rate weakened by 1.2% against the euro and by 5.1% against the dollar.

Calculated at prices in August 2018, the exports of machinery and transport equipment rose by 7.5% and their imports by 7.6%. The exports of road vehicles increased by nearly one-tenth, while their imports were cut to a similar extent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The growth on the export side was consistent with changes in trade in passenger cars and the parts of motor vehicles, while the reduction on the import side with changes in trade in passenger cars. The exports of telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment was up by more than one-fifth and their imports by one-tenth. The growth resulted from changes in trade in line telephone sets and their parts on the import side and from changes in trade in radio navigational aid apparatus on the export side. The exports and imports of electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, n.e.s., both slightly rose. The growth was connected to trade in electric accumulators and their parts in exports and to trade in electronic integrated circuits in imports. The exports of power generating machinery and equipment grew by more than one-fifth and their imports by more than one-seventh, which was mainly due to changes in trade in gas turbines in both exports and imports.

The export volume of manufactured goods lessened by 2.3% and their imports by 3.9%.

The export volume of fuels and electric energy increased by 9.0% and their import volume by 14%. The increase can be explained by changes in trade in natural and manufactured gas in both exports and imports and also by changes in trade in electric current in exports.

The volume of exports of food, beverages and tobacco was down by 2.5% and the volume of their imports by 3.4%. The decrease resulted from changes in trade in vegetables and fruits in exports and from changes in trade in tobacco and tobacco manufactures in imports.

The volume of exports to EU Member States grew by 3.2% and that of imports from there by 2.2%. The surplus on external trade in goods went up by EUR 113 million and amounted to EUR 611 million. These countries accounted for 80% of exports and 73% of imports.

In extra-EU trade, the volume of exports increased by 3.7% and that of imports by 5.2%. The balance of external trade in goods with this group of countries improved by EUR 9 million and showed a deficit of EUR 551 million.

In January–August 2019:

The value of exports amounted to EUR 72.2 billion (HUF 23.2 thousand billion) and that of imports to EUR 68.9 billion (HUF 22.2 thousand billion).

In January–August 2019 compared to a year earlier:

The volume of exports rose by 3.7% and that of imports by 5.4%.

The surplus on the balance of external trade in goods went down by EUR 954 million and amounted to EUR 3.3 billion.

The forint price level of external trade in goods was up by 1.7% in both exports and imports compared to the same period of the previous year. The terms of trade were unchanged. The forint depreciated by 1.7% against the euro and by 8.1% against the dollar.
