Fewer deaths and births, more marriages in September

In September 2017, the number of live births was 5.4% and that of deceases was 4.1% less than in the same month of 2016. The natural decrease was 1,399 persons, 59 more than a year earlier. In the first nine months of the year, the number of live births was 1.2% less than in the previous year, while that of deceases increased by 5.9% because of the significant death surplus at the beginning of the year. As a result, the natural decrease was 30,494 persons, 6,303 more than in the same period of the previous year.

In September 2017:

8,131 children were born, 467 or 5.4% less than in September 2016.

The number of deceased people was 9,530, which meant a decrease of 4.1% or numerically 408 deceases compared to September of the previous year.

The number of deaths and that of births dropped, as a result of which natural decrease was 1,399 as opposed to 1,340 in September 2016, which meant an increase of 4.4%.

The number of marriages increased, the 6,732 marriages registered was 2.8% (185 marriages) more than the figure in September last year.

In January–September 2017:

68,339 children were born, 799 (1.2%) fewer than in January–September 2016. 2016 was a leap year, thus the examined period was one day shorter this year. Taking into account this, the leap-day adjusted number of births decreased slightly less, by 0.8%. In January 0.4% and in May 10% more children were born, while in the other months, the number of births was lower than in the corresponding months of the previous year. The largest drop of 5.4% occurred in September.

98,833 people died, which meant a growth of 5.9% or numerically 5,504 more deceases than in the same period of 2016. In six months of the year more and in three months fewer deaths occurred than in the same months of the previous year. The most significant increase was in January–February when the number of the deceased grew by 25% on average. The largest decrease was in September when the number of deaths fell by 4.1% compared to a year earlier.

The number of deaths increased and that of births decreased, as a result of which natural decrease grew from 24,191 in January–September 2016 to 30,494 persons in the first nine months of 2017, which meant an increase of 26%.

The increase in the number of marriages lasting since 2011 stopped. The 42,808 marriages registered in the first nine months of the year was 831 (1.9%) fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year. Taking into consideration the leap-day effect, the decrease was somewhat lower, 1.7%. The number of marriages grew in four months and fell in five months. The largest increase occurred in June when by 7.2% more people married than in the same month last year. The most significant decline was in February when the leap-day adjusted number of marriages fell by 12% year-on-year.

There were 9.3 live births and 13.5 deceases per thousand inhabitants. The former was 0.1 per mille point down and the latter was 0.8 per mille point up on the value in the same period one year before, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease rose by 0.9 per mille point to 4.2 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.4 per thousand live births in the first nine months of the year, which meant a decrease of 0.7 per mille point year-on-year. The marriage rate of 5.9 per mille was unchanged.

The number of births changed to different extents in the regions; it increased in four and decreased in three regions. The rise was the most considerable in Southern Great Plain (2.9%) and the most significant fall was registered in Central Hungary (3.3%).

The number of deceases increased in every region, the most in Southern Transdanubia (7.4%) and the least in Northern Great Plain (3.5%).

The pace of natural decrease increased in all regions. The most significant rise (41%) was registered in Central Hungary and Northern Great Plain because of the above average decline in the number of births.

The number of marriages fell in all regions except Southern Great Plain. The largest decrease was registered in Southern Transdanubia (4.5%).
