More deaths, fewer births, higher natural decrease

In October 2017, the number of live births was 6.6% and that of deceases was 6.3% less than in the same month of 2016. The natural decrease was 2,480 persons, 132 less than a year earlier. In the first ten months of the year, the number of live births was 1.2% less than in the previous year, while that of deceases increased by 4.9% because of the significant death surplus at the beginning of the year. As a result, the natural decrease was 32,798 persons, 5,995 more than in the same period of the previous year.

In October 2017:

7,837 children were born, 557 or 6.6% less than in October 2016.

The number of deceased people was 10,317, which meant a decrease of 6.3% or numerically 689 deceases compared to October of the previous year.

The number of deaths and that of births dropped, as a result of which natural decrease was 2,480 as opposed to 2,612 in October 2016, which meant a decrease of 5.1%.

The number of marriages also decreased, the 3,115 marriages registered was 13.4% (480 marriages) less than the figure in October last year.

In January–October 2017:

76,630 children were born, 902 (1.2%) fewer than in January–October 2016. 2016 was a leap year, thus the examined period was one day shorter this year. Taking into account this, the leap-day adjusted number of births decreased to a lower extent, by 0.8% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In January, 0.4% and in May 10% more children were born, while in the other months, the number of births was lower than in the corresponding months of the previous year. The largest drop of 6.6% occurred in October.

109,428 people died, which meant a growth of 4.9% or numerically 5,093 more deceases than in the same period of 2016. In six months of the year more and in four months fewer deaths occurred than in the same months of the previous year. The most significant increase was in January–February when the leap-day adjusted number of the deceased grew by 25% on average. The largest decrease was in October when the number of deaths fell by 6.3% compared to a year earlier.

The number of deaths increased and that of births decreased, as a result of which natural decrease grew from 26,803 in January–October 2016 to 32,798 persons in 2017, which meant an increase of 22%.

The increase in the number of marriages lasting since 2011 stopped. The 46,061 marriages registered in the first ten months of the year was 1,173 (2.5%) fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year. Taking into consideration the leap-day effect, the decrease was somewhat lower, 2.3%. The number of marriages grew in four months and fell in six months. The largest increase occurred in June when 7.2% more people married than in the same month last year. The most significant decline was in October when the number of marriages fell by 13% year-on-year.

There were 9.4 live births and 13.4 deceases per thousand inhabitants. The former was 0.1 per mille point down and the latter was 0.6 per mille point up on the value in the same period one year before, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease rose by 0.7 per mille point to 4.0 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.5 per thousand live births in the first ten months of the year, which meant a decrease of 0.6 per mille point year-on-year. The marriage rate was 5.7 per mille, 0.1 per mille point lower than a year before.
