In quarter 1 2013, 1123 new dwellings were built, 54 percent fewer than in the previous year. The number of dwelling construction permits was 1383, which was a 36 percent decline compared to the first three months of 2012.

In 2012, 10560 new dwellings were built, 17 percent fewer than in the previous year. The number of dwelling construction permits was 10600, a 15 percent decline compared to the data of 2011. In Budapest, these figures fell even more sharply by 48 and 32% respectively. Within new home construction, the proportion of those dwellings, which were built by enterprises or put up for sale, continued to decrease.

The main characteristics of housing construction show considerable regional differences. In Budapest, home construction decreased by 58 percent, which was well above the average.

This low figure was unprecedented even in comparison with the years of the great depression and the difficult economic circumstances in the 40s and 50s.
