    In 2012 5.5 million tons of ear cereals were produced, 2% less than in the previous year, on an 8% larger area. The primary reason for the decrease was unfavourable weather conditions. Yields did not reach the figures of the previous year, except for oats. The production of almost 4 million tons of wheat shows a decrease of 3% compared to the previous year and is 9% lower than the average of the previous 5 years.

    In 2011 cereals were produced on 1.4 million hectares, a 5 per cent smaller area than in 2010, while production increased by 8% and amounted to nearly 5.7 million tons. The production of wheat, which is our most important cereal, was 7 per cent less than the average of the previous five years. Barley was also harvested from a smaller area than in the previous year, while its production increased by 5%.

    In 2010, 5.3 million tons of ear cereals were produced on 1.5 million hectares, which area is 11% less than in 2009. Due to the smaller average yield of wheat and winter barley, the ear cereal production in 2010 was 12% lower than in the previous year and 19% less than the average of the previous 5 years. The production of wheat, which is the most important cereal in Hungary, decreased by 15% compared to 2009, and was 20% less than the average production in years 2005-2009.
