International acknowledgements to Hungarian statistics: Gabriella Vukovich, the President of the HCSO was elected the president of the UN Statistical Commission for two years

 

On its annual meeting that started in New York on 28th February 2012, the UN Statistical Commission - on the proposal of Katherine K. Wallman, Chief Statistician, Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President, USA - Gabriella Vukovich, the President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office was elected president of the UN Statistical Commission for two years.

The UN Statistical Commission is a functional body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the world organisation. Members of the five-member Bureau at the head of the Statistical Commission: Chairman, three Vice-chairmen and a Rapporteur. In the field of international statistical activities the Commission is the highest decision-making body. In establishing and developing standard statistical methods and concepts its duty is to promote the adoption and use of these at international level. The Statistical Commission supervises the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). In addition to the professional and methodological harmonisation helping international comparisons, it pays special attention to developing the statistical activity of less developed countries and to the related international assistance. Besides, it has an important role in co-ordinating the statistical activities of different international organisations.
