The yearbook provides an overview of Hungary's demographic, social and economic trends, environmental characteristics and their changes over time, with the help of tens of thousands of data in some 500 tables, charts and maps. Compared to previous years, it is a novelty that the results of time use data collection showing the time use of the population were included in the yearbook, furthermore, that the number of registered organisations and earnings data are also available according to the new NACE Rev. 2.1 structure, alongside the NACE Rev. 2 classification, as well as that the International data chapter is published with more extensive content, various indicators.

Consumer prices increased by 4.4% on average in 2025, so the rate of inflation exceeded the previous year’s 3.7% level. Although it was the growth in service prices that drove the price rise the most, the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco, electricity, gas and other fuels as well as food went up at rates above the average, too.

On 1 September 2026, 319 thousand kindergarten children, 715 thousand primary school students and 411 thousand secondary school students begin the new school year. The changes in the number of students over several decades accurately reflect the demographic trends in Hungary. The largest number of students in primary education were those born during the Ratkó era. In the early 1960s, the number of “Ratkó children” was double the current figure, more than 1.5 million. In the mid-1980s, the number of “Ratkó grandchildren” stood at over 1.3 million.

International Dog Day is celebrated on the 26th of August every year. On this day, the attention is focused on man’s oldest and most faithful four-legged companion. The infographic shows which are the most popular dog breeds and dog names in Hungary, furthermore, provides insight into the regional differences in dog ownership, including the fact that in 2025, nearly twice as many dogs were kept per capita in Pest County as in the capital city at the bottom of the ranking.

According to seasonally and calendar adjusted data, financial corporations as well as households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) were in a net lending, while non-financial corporations and general government in a net borrowing position in the 1st quarter of 2026. The gross saving rate of households and NPISHs came to 20% and their gross investment rate to 5.3%. The gross profit share of non-financial corporations stood at 36% and their gross investment rate was 30%.

In 2025, the gradual expansion of domestic tourism performance continued. The majority of trips (more than 70%) were same-day trips. In terms of Hungarians’ travel habits, domestic trips continued to dominate over trips abroad. Both the number of trips abroad by Hungarians and of trips by foreigners to Hungary increased. Tourist accommodation establishments registered a record 47.2 million tourism nights, 5.1% more than in 2024. The volume of sales turnover of food service establishments was 0.6% higher than a year earlier.

The total number of visitors to the sixteen zoos, wildlife parks and culture parks operating in Hungary went over 4.1 million in 2025 (preliminary data).

Pesticide sales have increased some two-fold in Hungary since 2000. Pesticide use had a share of 6.8% in the intermediate consumption of agriculture in 2024. This proportion went up from 5.1% to 8.3% between the turn of the millennium and 2014, since when it has had a downward trend. In 2024, herbicides made up the largest share, 37% of the 20.5 thousand tonnes of sold pesticides, while 19% were fungicides, 17% insecticides and the remaining 27% other pesticides.
