The number of employed people was 4,490 thousand

Economic developments resulting from the coronavirus epidemic have not yet affected this period, so their effects are not yet felt in labour market data. Over the period of December 2019–February 2020, the average number of employed people was 4,490 thousand; the employment rate of people aged 15–64 increased to 70.0%. The level of employment was higher among men than among women, but the rates improved among women.

In December 2019–February 2020, compared to a year before:

The number of employed people decreased by 0.2% to 4,490 thousand. The increase in the domestic primary labour market totalled 7.1 thousand and that for those working at local units abroad was 5.4 thousand, while the number of people declaring to work in public employment decreased by 20 thousand.

A total of 4,409 thousand employed people were aged 15–64, and the employment rate of this age group grew to 70.0%. The number of the employed among men aged 15–64 was 2,417 thousand, and their employment rate decreased to 76.9%. Regarding 15–64 year-old women, the number of the employed was 1,992 thousand, and their employment rate increased to 63.0%

The number of employed people among young people aged 15–24 years decreased to 284 thousand people, and the employment rate to 28.4%. In the ‘best working age’, i.e. the 25–54 age group, the number of employed people decreased to 3,427 thousand people, and the employment rate by 0.6 percentage point to 83.7%. In the older, 55–64 age group, the number of the employed was 697 thousand, and their employment rate grew by 2.0 percentage points to 57.8%, partly for demographical reasons.

The employment rate of people aged 20–64 – the coverage regarding the development of employment objectives defined in the Europe 2020 Strategy – grew to 75.3%. The European Union has set a target of 75% by 2020; in Hungary, the employment rate of this age group is currently 82.9% for men and 67.8% for women.
