4 million 537 thousand people in employment

According to the methodology changed from 1 January 2021 in line with international regulations, 4 million 537 thousand people aged 15-74 were employed in January 2021, down 55 thousand on the year earlier. In the period from November 2020 to January 2021, 4 million 601 thousand people were employed, down 26 thousand on the year earlier, mainly due to declining employment among people working abroad but belonging to households in Hungary.

In January1 2021:

4 million 537 thousand people were employed2 in January, down 97 thousand on the previous month and down 55 thousand on the previous year, due to Covid-19 and seasonal effects.

71.1% of 15–64 year olds were employed, down 1.5 percentage points on December and down 0.7 percentage points on last year’s January.

In November 2020 –January 2021, compared to a year before:3

The number of employed people was 0.6% lower at 4 million 601 thousand. Employment increased by 21 thousand in the primary labour market, decreased by 10 thousand in the group of public workers and by 36 thousand among members of Hungarian households working abroad.

4 million 515 thousand people aged 15–64 were considered employed, the employment rate of this age group was 72.1%. The number of the employed among men was unchanged at 2 million 425 thousand, and their employment rate grew by 0.4 percentage points to 77.5%, partly for demographic reasons. Regarding women, the number of the employed decreased by 29 thousand to 2 million 90 thousand, and their employment rate by 0.3 percentage points to 66.7%.

The number of employed people in the young age group (15–24 years) decreased by 23 thousand to 269 thousand, and their employment rate by 2.0 percentage points to 27.2%. Among the so-called best working age population (25–54 years) the employment rate decreased by 0.7 percentage point to 86.2%. In the older, 55–64 age group, the number of the employed increased by 15 thousand to 709 thousand and the employment rate by 3.4 percentage points to 60.8%, partly for demographic reasons.
