Industrial production increased by 6.3%

In April 2019, the volume of industrial output grew by 6.3% year-on-year. Based on working-day adjusted data production rose by 6.0%.

In April 2019:

The volume of industrial production rose by 6.3% year-on-year. (Compared to the April data of the first estimate, the data in the second estimate did not change.)

Industrial output – according to the seasonally and working-day adjusted index – was below the previous month’s level by 1.1%.

The volume of industrial export grew by 4.9% year-on-year. Within export sales in manufacturing, the 37% representing transport equipment export went up by 6.8%, while the export in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for 14% weight stagnated.

Industrial domestic sales increased by 10.5%, within it domestic sales in manufacturing were 11.2% higher compared to the same month of the previous year.

Within industry, production grew by 6.0% in the decisive weight (96%) representing manufacturing, and it went up by 66% in the small weight representing mining and quarrying. The output of energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply) rose by 4.0%, mainly as a result of the colder weather compared to the previous year (according to the Hungarian Meteorological Service the April 2019 average temperature was 3.4 (C lower than the April 2018 average).

The manufacture of transport equipment accounting for 30% of manufacturing output grew by 9.3% year-on-year. The manufacture of motor vehicles went up by 14.6%, while the manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles rose by 2.8%.

The manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products representing 10.5% of manufacturing declined for the first time (by 2.0%) this year. Out of the two most significant groups the manufacture of communication equipment increased by 13.8%, at the same time the manufacture of consumer electronics dropped by 10.4%.

The rate of growth accelerated in the manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products providing more than 10% of manufacturing: the output went up by 10.9% in April compared to the same month of the previous year. The processing and preserving meat and the production of meat products, representing the largest weight (26%) grew by 7.6%. Out of the groups, the processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs carrying very little weight increased the most, by 40%, and the manufacture of beverages having the second largest weight rose remarkably as well, by 21%. The production decreased only in one group, in the small weight carrying manufacture of tobacco products (by 6.8%).

The manufacture of electrical equipment representing a smaller weight grew at the highest rate among the subsections: by 14.4% year-on-year, sales went up in both sales directions.

Manufacture of coke, and refined petroleum products increased for the first time this year (by 10.5%), mainly due to a favourable tendency in domestic sales.

Production growth continued in the medium-weight representing subsections: the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products went up by 9.1%, whilst the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products rose by 2.9% year-on-year.

Similarly to the previous month the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products representing the smallest weight fell the most, by 16.4%, decreases were measured in the majority of classes.
