Industrial production increased by 58.8%

In April 2021 the volume of industrial production exceeded by 58.8% the extremely low base level of last year’s April, caused by the coronavirus pandemic related restrictions. Based on working-day adjusted data production rose by 59.2%. According to seasonally and working-day adjusted data industrial output was 3.2% lower than in March 2021. Production volume slightly surpassed the pre-pandemic, April 2019 level.

In April 2021:

The volume of industrial production increased by 58.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. (Compared to the April data published in the first estimate, the data in the second estimate did not change.)

Industrial output in April – according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices – was 3.2% below the level of the previous month.

The volume of industrial export was above the previous year’s level by 84%. Transport equipment export, representing a 33% weight within export sales in manufacturing went up more than fourfold, while the export in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for a 14% weight grew by 51%.

Industrial domestic sales rose by 24.5%, while domestic sales in manufacturing were 27% higher compared to the same month of the previous year.

Within industry, production increased by 63% in the decisive weight (96%) representing manufacturing, at the same time it declined by 2.0% in the small weight representing mining and quarrying. The output of energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply) grew by 10.4%, first of all due to the colder weather compared with the previous year (according to the Hungarian Meteorological Service the April 2021 average temperature was 3.1(C lower than the April 2020 average).

The largest weight carrying manufacture of transport equipment representing 27% of the manufacturing output grew the most, nearly four and a half times year-on-year. The outstanding performance is primarily the result of the low base value caused by factory shutdowns in April of the previous year. The production value of manufacture of motor vehicles increased almost fourteen times, while that of manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles more than tripled.

The manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for 11% of manufacturing grew by 45%. Out of the two largest groups the manufacture of electronic components and boards increased by 66%, the manufacture of consumer electronics went up by 76%.

The manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products having a close to 11% share in manufacturing grew by 12.9%, due to an increase in both domestic and export sales. The processing and preserving meat and the production of meat products representing the largest weight (24%) rose by 17.9%, the manufacture of beverages, the second most significant group went up by 31% compared to the same month of the previous year. Decreases were recorded in two groups only: the manufacture of vegetable and animal oils and fats dropped by 2.0%, the manufacture of tobacco products declined by 1.4%.

The manufacture of electrical equipment, having a medium weight, also went up significantly, by 77%, mainly owing to the expansion in the manufacture of electric motors, generators as well as that of batteries and accumulators.

Out of the other two medium-weight representing subsections the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products increased by 39%, the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products rose by 30% year-on-year.

The growth of rate also accelerated in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products: the output rose by 40%, mostly due to the performance of the manufacture of plastics in primary forms, having a two-third share in the subsection.

Only the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations did not increase compared to a year earlier, the effect of the high base played a part in this trend, too.

Industrial production rose in every region of Hungary, to the largest degree, by 159% in Western Transdanubia, the lowest increase was measured in Budapest (19.8%).

Total new orders volume in the observed divisions of manufacturing grew by 94% compared to April 2020. New domestic orders went up by 46%, new export orders rose by 104%. The total stock of orders at the end of April was above the previous year’s level by 4.0%.

In January–April 2021, compared to the same period of the previous year:

Industrial production increased by 13.8%. The volume of export sales representing 65% of all sales grew by 18.4%, domestic sales accounting for 35% of all sales rose by 7.9%.

In the regions volume increases between 5.7% and 22% were recorded, the highest growth was observed in Northern Hungary.
