3.1% increase in tourism nights at accommodation establishments

In September 2018, the number of nights spent by international tourists declined by 0.5% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists grew by 7.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. Total gross revenues grew by 11% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments. In January–September 2018, commercial accommodation establishments saw a 3.9% growth in tourism nights and a 9.4% rise in gross revenues compared to the same period of 2017.

In September 2018, compared to the same month of the previous year:

The number of international tourist arrivals grew by 0.8% to nearly 560 thousand. The number of tourism nights they spent fell by 0.5% compared to the high base a year earlier but was still nearly 1.5 million. The number of tourism nights increased in all types of accommodation except hotels. In hotels accounting for 83% of tourism nights, the rate of decline was 2.2%. More than half of tourism nights were spent by foreigners in the Budapest-Central Danube Region, 1.2% less than in the same month of the previous year.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 7.7% and exceeded 540 thousand. The number of tourism nights they spent grew by 7.9% to nearly 1.2 million. The number of tourism nights increased in each type of accommodation and in all tourist regions. At Lake Balaton, which is the most popular region, accommodation establishments recorded 10% more tourism nights.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 1.5 percentage points to 67.0%.

The total gross revenue of accommodation establishments increased by 11% to HUF 49 billion at current prices; within this, accommodation fee revenues also increased by 11% (to HUF 29 billion).

Széchenyi Recreation Card holders spent nearly HUF 1.2 billion, 2.1% more in commercial accommodation establishments. Much of this amount, about HUF 1 billion, was realized in hotels.

On 30 September 2018, compared to the same date of the previous year:

3,207 commercial accommodation establishments were in operation with 89 thousand available rooms and nearly 291 thousand bed-places. The number of rooms was almost unchanged and the number of bed-places decreased by 1.8%.

In January–September 2018, compared to the same period of the previous year:

Commercial accommodation establishments registered a total of 9.8 million arrivals and more than 24.6 million tourism nights, up 5.2% and 3.9% respectively. Foreign guests spent 2.7% more (12.1 million) and domestic guests 5.1% more (12.5 million) nights in commercial accommodation establishments.

Room occupancy in hotels increased by 2.1 percentage points to 62.4%.

Total gross sales in commercial accommodation establishments grew by 9.4% at current prices to a total of HUF 389 billion. Within this, accommodation revenues increased by 7.9% to over HUF 232 billion.
