Tourism nights nearly tripled compared to April 2020 and fell 91% on the same month in 2019

As a result of border crossing restrictions and Covid-19 protection measures1 for commercial accommodation, domestic tourists spent 87% fewer tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments2 (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels) in April compared to the same month in 2019, before the outbreak. International guests spent 94% fewer nights. Compared to April 2020, the observed indicators show an increase, with the number of tourism nights in April 2021 almost three times higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights increased by 2 thousand compared to the previous month.

In April 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year:

43 thousand domestic guests (up 21 thousand) spent 138 thousand tourism nights (up 76 thousand). 61% of nights were spent in hotels, where the increase was fourfold. Boarding houses and community hostels exceeded the previous year's April turnover by 31% and 17% respectively. Budapest recorded the highest increase (almost four times).

Foreign arrivals increased by 20 thousand and tourism nights by 61 thousand. The 23 thousand guests who arrived at accommodation establishments spent 79 thousand tourism nights. A significant proportion of guests stayed in hotels, with the number of nights spent there more than quadrupling compared to April 2020. The Budapest-Central Danube Region tourism region saw a six-fold increase.

Total gross sales revenues at current prices were HUF 3.1 billion higher at HUF 4.4 billion.

In April 2021:

1,261 commercial accommodation establishments, including 475 hotels and 570 boarding houses were open for part or all of the month.

Domestic guests spent 63% of all tourism nights.

In January- April 2021 compared to the same period of the previous year:

Commercial accommodation establishments registered 81% fewer tourism nights, a total of 797 thousand. Domestic guests spent 76% and foreign guests 87% fewer tourism nights (512 thousand and 285 thousand, respectively) in commercial accommodation establishments.

Total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments decreased by 82% at current prices and amounted to HUF 15.5 billion.
