11% more tourism nights than in August 2020, but 24% fewer than in the same month of 2019

In August, domestic guests spent 1.9% more tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments1 (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels) than in the same month of 2020 and 1.4% more than in August 2019, before the outbreak. Foreign visitors spent 50% more nights than in August 2020 and 56% fewer than in the same period in 2019. 329 thousand more domestic tourism nights and 364 thousand more international ones were recorded than in the previous month.

In August 2021, compared to same month of previous year:

1.8% fewer, 914 thousand, domestic guests spent 1.9% more, 2.6 million, tourism nights. 59% of nights were spent in hotels, almost the same as a year earlier. Boarding houses recorded 3.6%, bungalow complexes 11.3% and camping sites 5.3% fewer tourism nights than in August last year. The resumption of camps boosted turnover in community hostels by two thirds. Lake Balaton was the most popular tourist region, accounting for more than a third of domestic tourism nights.

61% more, 339 thousand, international visitors spent 50% more, 936 thousand, tourism nights in accommodation establishments. Hotels accounted for 63% of guests, with the number of nights spent in hotels up 60% compared to August 2020. Budapest recorded the highest (more than double) increase.

Total gross sales revenues at current prices increased by 24% to HUF 58.7 billion.

In August 2021:

2,758 commercial accommodation establishments, including 880 hotels and 1,049 boarding houses, were open for part or all of the month.

Domestic guests accounted for 74% of all tourism nights.

Cardholders used their Széchenyi Holiday Cards at commercial accommodation establishments to pay 1.6% less, totalling HUF 8.0 billion.

In January–August 2021 compared to same period of previous year:

Commercial accommodation establishments recorded 17% fewer nights, totalling 9.2 million. Domestic guests spent 8.7% and foreign ones 37% fewer tourism nights (7.1 and 2.1 million respectively) in commercial accommodation establishments.

Total gross revenue decreased by 15% at current prices to HUF 159 billion for commercial accommodation establishments.
