Unemployment rate was 3.5%

In the period of July–September 2019, the average number of unemployed people was 163 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 3.5%. The indicators of women significantly improved, while unemployment practically stagnated among men.

In July–September 2019, compared to a year before:

The unemployment among 15–74 year-old men did not change essentially, the number of unemployed was 85 thousand and the unemployment rate 3.3%. Regarding women, the number of the unemployed declined by 15 thousand to 77 thousand, and the unemployment rate by 0.7 percentage point to 3.7%.

Among people aged 15–24, the number of the unemployed was 38 thousand and their unemployment rate 11.4%. Nearly a quarter of the unemployed belonged to this age group. The unemployment rate of the 25–54 age group, i.e. people belonging to the ‘best working age’, decreased by 0.4 percentage point to 3.0%, and that of people aged 55–74 decreased by 0.5 percentage point to 2.2%.

The average duration of unemployment was 12.4 months; 34.1% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were long-term unemployed.

The unemployment rate of people aged 15-74 was the lowest in Western Transdanubia and Central Transdanubia, with 1.7% and 1.9% respectively, and the highest in Northern Great Plain, with 6.6%. In most regions, the unemployment rate stagnated or decreased slightly, with the largest change occurring in Budapest, where the rate declined by 1.4 percentage points to 2.1%.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service (https://nfsz.munka.hu/), the total number of registered jobseekers decreased by 3.1% to 243 thousand.
