7,581 children born and 9,984 people lose their lives in May
In May 2022, 7,581 children were born and 9,984 people died according to preliminary data. In the last twelve months, i.e. between June 2021 and May 2022, the number of births diminished by 2.0% and that of deaths by 7.6%, while the number of marriages increased by 0.4% compared to the period one year earlier.

A total of 7,581 children were born, 6.3% or 451 more than a year earlier.
9,984 people lost their lives, 11% less or 1,201 fewer than in May 2021. The current value is similar to the value of May 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The natural decrease was 2,403, as opposed to 4,055 in May 2021.
7,234 couples got married, which was 3.6% or 252 more than in May 2021.
Between June 2021 and May 2022:
90,379 children were born in the last twelve months, 1,835 fewer or 2.0% less than in the previous twelve months. In January-May this year, there were 7.3% fewer births, including an 11% decrease in births in January-April and a 6.3% increase in May compared to the same period in 2021.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.55 per female, compared with 1.57 in the previous twelve months.
There were 144,494 deaths, 7.6% less or 11,874 fewer than in the previous twelve months. The number of deaths fell by 16% in January-May this year, with all months except February down on the previous year, the largest fall being in March-April, at 29%.
The number of births decreased to a lower extent than that of deaths, as a result of which the natural decrease was 54,115, which was a decrease of 16% compared to the value of 64,154 in the previous twelve months.
70,545 couples got married, 0.4% or 304 more than in the previous twelve months. There were 6.2% less marriages in January–May this year, within which 10% less marriages were registered in January–April and 3.6% more in May than in the same months of 2021.
There were 9.3 live births and 14.9 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.1 per mille point and that of deaths 1.2 per mille point lower than in June 2020–May 2021, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease was down by 1.0 per mille point to 5.6 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.4 per thousand live births, 0.3 per mille point larger than in the previous twelve months. The marriage rate was 7.3 per mille, 0.1 per mille point higher than in the period one year earlier.
