In December the number of employed persons increased to 4 million 723 thousand

In December 2023, the average number of employed persons1 aged 15-74 increased by 21 thousand to 4 million 723 thousand2. In 2023, for the year as a whole, the average number of employed people increased by 29 thousand to 4 million 724 thousand, the employment rate of people aged 15-64 was 74.8%, being 0,4 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

In October–December 2023 compared to a year before:

In the October–December 2023 period, the number of employed persons was 4 million 740 thousand. While the number of people working in the domestic primary labour market went up by 37 thousand and that of those working abroad grew by 8 thousand, the number of public workers decreased by 7 thousand.

Among the 15–64-year-olds, 4 million 615 thousand people were classified as employed, the employment rate of the age group was 75.0%. The number of employed men was basically unchanged, 2 million 431 thousand persons, with an employment rate of 78.9%. The number of employed women grew by 22 thousand to 2 million 183 thousand persons, with an employment rate of 71.0%.

In the youth age group (15-24-year-olds), 269 thousand people were employed, their employment rate was 27.2%. The employment rate among the so called ‘prime’ working-age population (aged 25–54 years) remained essentially unchanged at 88.3%, while in the older age group (55–64-year-olds) rose by 2.8 percentage points to 69.6%.

Among the 15–64-year-olds, the employment rate was the highest in the capital (79.6%) while the lowest value was recorded in Northern Hungary (69.4%). Increase in the employment rate was the highest in Western Transdanubia (1.4 percentage points), while the lowest in Southern Transdanubia and in Northern Hungary (equally by 0.7percentage points).

In 2023, compared to a year before:

The number of employed people increased by 29 thousand to 4 million 724 thousand. The number of people working in the domestic primary labour market was up by 25 thousand, that of people working at local units abroad grew by 12 thousand, while the number of public workers decreased by 8 thousand.

Out of the employed, 4 million 604 thousand were aged 15-64, with the employment rate for this age group increasing by 0.4 percentage points to 74.8%. The rate increased by 0.2 percentage points for men to 79.0%, and by 0.6 percentage points for women to 70.5%.

Considering the main age groups employment levels remained basically unchanged for those aged 15-24 as well as 25-54, at the same time a significant increase occurred at the 55-64 age group, their employment rate reaching, by a growth of 3.6 percentage points, 69.1%.
