Industrial production lessened by 0.4% year-on-year and increased by 2.3% compared to the previous month

The volume of industrial production declined by 0.4%, while based on working-day adjusted data, production grew by 5.4%, year-on-year in May 2026. Compared to crude data, the significant difference is due to the fact that there were two fewer working-days in this month than in May 2025. Production decreased in the majority of the manufacturing subsections. According to seasonally and working-day adjusted data industrial output was 2.3% higher than in April 2026.

In May 2026:

The volume of industrial production declined by 0,4% compared to the same period of the previous year. (Compared to the May data published in the first estimate, the data in the second estimate did not change.)

Industrial output – according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices – was 2.3% above the previous month’s level.

The volume of industrial export was 1.7% higher than a year earlier. The export sales of the manufacture of transport equipment, representing a 31% weight within export sales in manufacturing, grew by 2.3%, while the exports of the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, accounting for a 19% weight, went up by 44%.

Domestic sales of industry decreased by 6.9%, those of manufacturing declined by 5.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Within industry, production stagnated in manufacturing, representing a decisive weight (96%). Production rose by 47% in mining and quarrying, which has only a small weight, while it dropped by 9.6% in the energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply).

Output volume of the manufacture of transport equipment, having the largest weight (25% share) within manufacturing, grew by 0.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. Motor vehicles manufacturing increased by 12.3%, while the manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles declined by 9.0%.

The manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, accounting for 15% within manufacturing output, rose – at the highest rate out of the subsections – by 43%. Considering the two largest groups, the manufacture of computers and peripheral equipment went up by 132%, at the same time the manufacture of electronic components and boards fell by 19.5%.

The manufacture of electrical equipment, representing an 8.6% weight in manufacturing decreased by 5.3% year-on-year. Out of the two groups representing the largest weight, production volume in the manufacture of batteries and accumulators declined by 0.4%, the manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers and electricity distribution and control dropped by 8.7%.

The manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products, having a 12% share in manufacturing, was 4.5% lower than in the same month of the previous year; export sales rose, while domestic sales declined. Processing and preserving meat and the production of meat products, representing the largest weight (23%), dropped by 5.8% year-on-year. Production decreased between 4.2% and 18.7% in other seven groups, too, least of all in the manufacture of tobacco products, to the greatest extent in the processing and preserving of fruit and vegetables. Output grew between 0.4% and 15.4% in the other three groups, at the highest rate in the manufacture of vegetable and animal oils and fats, least of all in the manufacture of bakery and farinaceous products.

Out of the two subsections representing medium weight, the manufacture of rubber and plastics products and other non-metallic mineral products declined by 4.9%, the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment rose by 1.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.

A fall was measured first time this year in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. representing a 4.9% weight in manufacturing: the output dropped by 11.0% in May compared to the same month of 2025. Decreases were recorded in the majority of classes.

Out of the subsections the manufacture of coke, and refined petroleum products, having a 3.8% share in manufacturing, lagged behind the most, by 33%, year-on-year, sales fell in both directions.

Industrial output increased in three regions and dropped in the other five, year-on-year. The highest volume growth was observed in the Northern Great Plain (22%), the most significant decline (25%) was registered in Pest region.

The volume of total new orders in the observed divisions of manufacturing was 13.6% higher compared to May 2025. New domestic orders increased by 1.6%, new export orders grew by 15.8%. The total stock of orders at the end of May was 41% above the previous year’s level.

In January–May 2026, compared to the same period of the previous year:

Industrial production increased by 0.7%. The volume of export sales, representing 65% of all sales, rose by 1.9%, domestic sales accounting for 35% of all sales lessened by 3.7%.

Out of the thirteen manufacturing subsections production declined in seven, to the greatest extent, by 28% in the manufacture of coke, and refined petroleum products. The output of the manufacture of transport equipment, the largest subsection, increased by 1.4%. In the remaining subsections volumes grew between 1.3% and 26%, at the highest rate in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products.
