According to preliminary data, 5,790 children were born and 9,167 people died in June 2026. The number of births decreased by 2.6%, that of deaths by 3.1%, while the number of marriages rose by 8.9% compared to the same month of the previous year.
In June 2026:
A total of 5,790 children were born, 2.6% or 157 fewer than in June 2025.
9,167 people lost their lives, 3.1% or 291 fewer than a year earlier.
The natural decrease was 3,377, as opposed to 3,511 in June 2025.
4,942 couples got married, 8.9% or 403 more than a year earlier.
There were 7.4 live births and 11.8 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.2 per mille points lower and that of deaths 0.3 per mille points lower than in June 2025. The natural decrease per thousand population diminished by 0.1 per mille points to 4.3. There were 6.4 marriages per thousand population, 0.5 per mille points more than in June of the previous year.
In January–June 2026:
34,312 children were born, 2.0% or 703 fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 3.4% lower in January–March, 1.7% lower in May–June and 1.8% higher in April than in the same months of the previous year. There were 34.3 live births per thousand females aged 15–49 years, 0.1 per mille points more than a year earlier.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.27 per female, compared with 1.28 a year earlier.
There were 62,330 deaths, 4.1% or 2,679 fewer than one year earlier. 6.9% fewer people died in January–March, 2.0% fewer in May–June and 1.6% more in April than in the same months of the previous year.
As the balance of births and deaths, the natural decrease was 28,018, 6.6% fewer than the 29,994 recorded for the same period of the previous year.
21,177 couples got married, 4.4% or 895 more than a year earlier. 20% more marriages were registered in January–March, 8.9% more in June and 9.2% fewer in April–May than in the same months of 2025.
There were 7.3 live births and 13.3 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.1 per mille points lower and that of deaths 0.5 per mille points lower than in January–June 2025. The rate of natural decrease lessened by 0.4 per mille points to 6.0 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 4.1 per thousand live births, which was 0.7 per mille points higher than in the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 4.5 per mille, 0.2 per mille points higher than a year earlier.

The number of births declined in three regions as well as in the capital, while it increased in four regions compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest drop was observed in Budapest, while the largest growth occurred in Northern Hungary.
The number of deaths decreased in all regions except for the Northern Great Plain, compared with the same period of the previous year. The largest decline was observed in Northern Hungary, while the smallest decrease occurred in Central Transdanubia.
The rate of natural decrease declined in all regions except for Budapest. The largest decrease was observed in Northern Hungary, while the smallest decrease was observed in Western Transdanubia.
The number of marriages increased in all regions except for the capital. The largest rise was recorded in Northern Hungary, while the smallest increase occurred in Southern Transdanubia.
