To visualize interactive thematic maps a browser software capable of showing so called SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format pictures is needed. Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 3.x, Opera 9.x, Safari 3.x and Google Chrome browsers (as well as the newer versions of these) are directly able to do this, while an extension called Adobe SVG Viewer should be installed for the browser Internet Explorer 6–8. Its installation, under Windows NT, 2000 and XP, may only be made by a user with an administrator authorization. The freeware Adobe SVG Viewer may be downloaded from the website of Adobe. Beyond that, authorization is needed to run JavaScipt command files in the browser.

If you can see the red “SVG” and “JavaScript” text after the colon, then your browser is able to show interactive thematic maps:

User guide

You can select the indicators from the list above the map. You can change number of categories, method of categorize, and colours of the cartograms can be changed from the list below of the window. You can zoom in (+) or out of (–) the map by clicking on the zoom icons. By clicking on the right-hand icon you get the original size of the map. The position of the view can be changed by moving the red rectangle on the overview map. If you move the mouse cursor over the thematic map, then the given territorial unit will have a different colour, and the code and name of the territorial unit, and the value of the chosen indicator will be seen under the map and next to the mouse cursor after you stop it. By clicking on the "Show/hide histogram" icon you can display or switch off the distribution chart of data. The chart can be shown only above a specific window size. If you move the mouse cursor over the histogram, then the territorial unit related to the given value will have a different colour, and the code and name of the territorial unit, and the value of the chosen indicator will be seen under the map. In case of slower computers and larger numbers of territorial units (e.g. maps of settlements) displaying the histogram can significantly slow down changing the map view!
