HCSO’s position on the statement concerning the EU-SILC dataset, 03/07/2026

The position of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) on the statement entitled HCSO EU-SILC data position issued by the leadership of the Sociological Scientific Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Economic Sciences Committee, the Scientific Committee of the Economy of Human Resources of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Society of Economists and the Hungarian Sociological Association

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office highly values the professional work of scientific organisations that issued the statement and attaches great importance to a continuous professional dialogue between the scientific community and official statistics. In the production of official statistics, the HCSO, as a member of the European Statistical System, shall act in accordance with the National Statistical Code of Practice, the relevant EU requirements, and the provisions of the Hungarian Statistics Act. The methodology and quality of the EU-SILC dataset as well as the provided data files were verified and validated by Eurostat on every occasion.

The HCSO has been, is and will remain open for professional, scientific consultation and any critical observations.

By letter of 23 June 2026, the HCSO described in detail its official professional position on the EU-SILC data collection, the methodological overview of the data revision, the chronology of communications and professional arguments to the leadership of the Sociological Scientific Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Economic Sciences Committee, the Scientific Committee of the Economy of Human Resources of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Society of Economists and the Hungarian Sociological Association. In the letter, the Office offered the opportunity for professional consultation.

The HCSO has not yet received any response from the organisations regarding either the professional explanations provided or the possibility of professional consultation offered. These are not addressed in the statement issued on 30 June 2026 by the leaders of the five organisations.

The HCSO has consulted with the researchers in the field and the academic community on several occasions in the recent past, and will remain committed to open professional dialogue. For this purpose, the Office continues to initiate personal professional consultation with the leaders of the organisations that issued the statement. The HCSO is convinced that a detailed overview of the issues raised, the direct discussion over different professional positions, and the sharing of methodological experiences can contribute to the common purpose: to further strengthen the quality of official statistics and user confidence.
