In December, 6,565 children are born and 11,727 people lose their lives

According to preliminary data, 6,565 children were born and 11,727 people died in December 2023. The number of births lessened by 12%, that of deaths by 7.2% and the number of marriages by 4.1% compared to December 2022.

In December 2023:

A total of 6,565 children were born, 12% or 867 fewer than a year earlier.

11,727 people lost their lives, 7.2% or 904 fewer than in December 2022.

The natural decrease was 5,162, as opposed to 5,199 in December 2022.

2,671 couples got married, which was 4.1% or 115 fewer than in December 2022.

In 2023:

85,200 children were born, 3,291 or 3.7% less than in the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 7.8% more in January–March, while it was 2.1% less in April, 9.3% less in May–June, and 6.9% less in July–December compared to the corresponding months of 2022.

The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.50 per female, which was 1.52 a year earlier.

There were 127,200 deaths, 6.8% less or 9,246 fewer than one year earlier. 11% less people died in January–February, 4.2% less in March–June, and 6.9% less in July–December compared to the same periods of the previous year.

The number of deaths decreased to a greater extent than that of births, resulting in a natural decrease of 42,000, which was 12% lower than the value of 47,955 for the previous year.

50,150 couples got married, 22% or 13,817 fewer than a year earlier. 45% less marriages were registered in January–February, 31% less in March–April, 23% less in May–August and 7.5% less in September–December than in the corresponding months of 2022.

There were 8.9 live births and 13.3 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.3 per mille points and that of deaths 0.8 per mille points lower than in 2022, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease lessened by 0.6 per mille points to 4.4 per mille. In 2023 the number of infant deaths was 3.1 per thousand live births, which was 0.6 per mille points less than in the previous year. The marriage rate was 5.2 per mille, 1.4 per mille points lower than a year earlier.

The positive balance of international migration lowered the natural decrease of the population, as a result of which the estimated number of the resident population, updated on the basis of the 2022 census, was 9,580 thousand at the end of 2023.
