4 million 699 thousand people in employment

In January 2023, the average number of employed persons1 aged 15–74 years was 4 million 699 thousand2, 46 thousand more than a year earlier.

November 2022–January 2023 compared to a year before:

The number of employed persons was 29 thousand more, 4 million 706 thousand. While the number of people working in the domestic primary labour market was up by 24 thousand and that of those working abroad grew by 14 thousand, the number of public workers decreased by 9 thousand.

Among the 15–64-year-olds, 4 million 592 thousand people were classified as employed, the employment rate for the age group was 74.6%. For men, the number of people in employment was essentially unchanged at 2 million 426 thousand, their employment rate was up by 0.4 percentage points to 78.8%. For females, employment rose by 18 thousand to 2 million 166 thousand, their employment rate increased by 0.9 percentage points to 70.4%.

In the young age group (of 15–24-year-olds), the number of employed persons was 269 thousand, their employment rate dropped by 0.6 percentage points to 27.4%. The employment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 88.1% among the ‘prime’ working-age population (aged 25–54 years), and by 3.1 percentage points to 67.4% in the older age group (of 55–64-year-olds).
