The number of tourism nights rose by 3.8% compared to May 2022

In May 2023, 1.3 million guests spent 3.1 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments1 (commercial, private and other accommodation establishments). The number of guests was 7.1% and that of tourism nights 3.8% higher than a year earlier, due to expansions in international tourist arrivals and tourism nights. The number of nights spent by domestic guests fell by 4.1%. In January–May 2023, domestic guests spent 7.3% less and foreign ones 13% more tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.

In May 2023:

The number of tourist arrivals increased by 7.1% and that of tourism nights by 3.8% in total at tourist accommodation establishments. 72% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where the number of nights grew by 1.7%. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 9.6% more tourism nights than in May 2022.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals diminished by 3.1% and that of domestic tourism nights by 4.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. Tourist arrivals numbered 721 thousand and the tourism nights spent 1.6 million at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 523 thousand tourist arrivals and 1.1 million tourism nights. 68% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 5.4% lower than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 2.1% compared to May 2022. The two most popular tourism regions, Lake Balaton and the Budapest–Central Danube Region, registered 22% and 19%, respectively, of domestic tourism nights.

The number of international tourist arrivals rose by 23% and that of international tourism nights by 13% compared to the same month of the previous year. The 573 thousand guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent nearly 1.6 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 431 thousand guests and 1.1 million tourism nights, respectively. 78% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 11% higher than a year earlier. There was a growth of 19% in the number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments compared to May 2022. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where 64% of international tourism nights were registered.

A total of 22,533 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,614 commercial and 19,919 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.

Of commercial accommodation establishments, 954 hotels and 1,079 boarding houses were open for part or all of May.

The total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 49 billion, which was 31% higher at current prices than a year earlier.

Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to pay HUF 3.2 billion, 38% more at current prices, at commercial accommodation establishments.

In January–May 2023 compared to same period of previous year:

Tourist accommodation establishments registered 2.0% more, a total of 12 million tourism nights.

Domestic guests spent 7.3% less and foreign ones 13% more (respective 5.9 million and 6.1 million) tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments.
