7,004 children are born and 11,606 people lose their lives in March

According to preliminary data, 7,004 children were born and 11,606 people died in March 2023. The number of births was the same as in March 2022, while the number of deaths lessened by 7.3% and that of marriages by 32% compared to March 2022.

In March 2023:

A total of 7,004 children were born, which is the same as the previous year.

11,606 people lost their lives, 7.3% less or 920 fewer than in March 2022.

The natural decrease was 4,602, as opposed to 5,522 in March 2022.

3,089 couples got married, which was 32% less or 1,457 fewer than in March 2022.

Between April 2022 and March 2023:

89,799 children were born, 0.7% less or 611 fewer than in the previous twelve months. Within this year, the number of births grew by 7.1% in January–March compared to the same period of 2022.

The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.55 per female, which is the same as the value calculated for the previous twelve months.

There were 131,883 deaths, 12% less or 18,272 fewer than in the previous twelve months. Within the first quarter of this year, the number of deaths lessened by 10% compared to the same period of 2022.

The number of births went down to a lower extent than that of deaths, as a result of which the natural decrease was 42,084, which was 30% lower than the value of 59,745 for the previous twelve months.

60,061 couples got married, 15% less or 10,269 fewer than in the previous twelve months. In the January–March period this year, 39% less marriages were registered than in the same months of 2022.

There were 9.3 live births and 13.6 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was the same as in April 2021–March 2022 while that of deaths 1.9 per mille points lower, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease lessened by 1.8 per mille points to 4.3 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.2 per thousand live births, 0.4 per mille point lower than in the previous twelve months. The marriage rate was 6.2 per mille, 1.0 per mille points lower than in the period a year earlier.

The number of births rose in half of the regions and diminished in the others compared to the previous twelve months. The highest increase was in Pest Region and Northern Hungary, while the largest decrease occurred in Budapest.

The number of deaths went down in all the regions compared to the previous twelve months. The highest falls occurred in Northern Hungary and in Northern Great Plain and the lowest ones in the capital and Pest Region.

The natural decrease lessened in all the regions, the most in Pest Region and the least in Budapest.

The number of marriages fell short in all the regions of the value for the previous twelve months. The highest falls were in Budapest and Central Transdanubia and the lowest one in Southern Transdanubia.
