In February, 6,197 children are born and 10,664 people lose their lives

According to preliminary data, 6,197 children were born and 10,664 people died in February 2024. The number of births lessened by 5.7%, that of deaths by 3.0%, while the number of marriages increased by 22% compared to February 2023.

In February 2024:

A total of 6,197 children were born, 5.7% or 378 fewer than in February 2023. 2024 is a leap year, thus vital events occur in a one day longer period this year. The leap-year adjusted number of births in February was 9.0% lower than in the same month of the previous year.

10,664 people lost their lives, 3.0% or 327 fewer than in February 2023. Calculating with the leap-day effect, the number of deaths in February was 6.3% lower than in the previous year.

The natural decrease was 4,467, as opposed to 4,416 in February 2023. The leap-day-adjusted natural decrease in February was lower, at 4,313 people.

2,363 couples got married, which was 22% or 425 more than in February 2023. Taking into consideration the leap-day effect, the increase in the number of marriages in February was 18%.

In January–February 2024:

12,855 children were born, 1,272 or 9.0% less than in January–February 2023. The number of births adjusted for the leap-day was 11% lower than in the same period last year. Within this, the number of live births was 12% less in January and 9.0% less in February than in 2023.

The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.39 per female, which was 1.53 a year earlier.

There were 22,712 deaths, 0.6% less or 134 fewer than one year earlier. Considering the leap-day effect, the decrease in the number of deaths in this period was 2.2%. Compared to the same periods of the previous year, 1.6% more people died in January, and 6.3% less in February.

The number of births decreased to a greater extent than that of deaths, resulting in a natural decrease of 9,857, which was 13% higher than the value of 8,719 for January–February 2023. According to leap-day-adjusted data, the natural decrease rose by 11% compared to the same period of the previous year.

4,040 couples got married, 28% or 873 fewer than a year earlier. The leap-day adjusted increase in the number of marriages was 25%. 36% more marriages were registered in January and 18% more in February than in the corresponding months of 2023.

There were 8.2 live births and 14.5 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.9 per mille points and that of deaths 0.3 per mille points lower than in January–February 2023, as a result of which the rate of natural decrease increased by 0.7 per mille points to 6.3 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 4.0 per thousand live births, which was 1.2 per mille points more compared to the same periods of the previous year. The marriage rate was 2.6 per mille, 0.5 per mille points higher than a year earlier.

Between March 2023 and February 2024:

83,928 children were born, 6.6% or 5,962 fewer, and if the leap day effect is taken into account, 6.9% less than in the previous twelve months.

there were 128,066 deaths, 4.2% or 5,545 fewer, and if the leap day effect is considered, 4.4% less than in the previous twelve months.

51,023 couples got married, 17% or 10,367 fewer than in the previous twelve months, which is the same when the leap-day effect is taken into consideration.
