6,339 children are born and 11,773 people lose their lives

According to preliminary data, 6,339 children were born and 11,773 people died in December 2024. The number of births lessened by 4.1%, that of deaths by 7.0% and that of marriages by 25% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In December 2024:

A total of 6,339 children were born, 4.1% or 270 fewer than in December 2023.

11,773 people lost their lives, 7.0% or 886 less than a year earlier.

The natural decrease was 5,434, as opposed to 6,050 in December 2023.

1,999 couples got married, which was 25% or 667 less than a year earlier.

In 2024:

77,500 children were born, 7,725 or 9.1% less than in 2023. Within this, the number of live births was 9.1% lower in January–March, 6.8% lower in April–May, 14% lower in June–August and 6.4% lower in September–December than in the same periods of 2023.

The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.38 per female, which was 1.51 a year earlier.

There were 127,500 deaths, 0.5% or 676 fewer than one year earlier. Compared to the same periods of the previous year, 1.1% more people died in January–February, 6.1% more in July–October, while 5.6% less people deceased in March–June and 4.2% less in November–December.

Due to the balance of births and deaths, the natural decrease was 50,000 people, which was 16% more than the value of 42,951 for 2023.

46,550 couples got married, 7.2% or 3,589 less than a year earlier. 27% more marriages were registered in January–February, 3.2% more in April–May and 2.0% more in August, but 1.9% less in March, 14% less in June–July and 19% less in September–December compared to the corresponding periods of 2023.

There were 8.1 live births and 13.3 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.8 per mille points lower, while that of deaths was almost the same as in 2023. The rate of natural decrease increased by 0.8 per mille points to 5.2 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.8 per thousand live births, which was 0.8 per mille points higher compared to the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 4.9 per mille, 0.4 per mille points lower than a year earlier.

The positive balance of international migration lowered the natural decrease of the population, as a result of which the estimated number of the resident population, updated on the basis of the 2022 census, was 9,540 thousand at the end of 2024.
