5,921 children are born and 9,148 people lose their lives

According to preliminary data, 5,921 children were born and 9,148 people died in June 2025. The number of births lessened by 2.6%, that of deaths by 2.5% and that of marriages by 8.1% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In June 2025:

A total of 5,921 children were born, 2.6% or 156 fewer than in June 2024.

9,148 people lost their lives, 2.5% or 237 fewer than a year earlier.

The natural decrease was 3,227, as opposed to 3,308 in June 2024.

4,542 couples got married, 8.1% or 400 less than a year earlier.

In January–June 2025:

34,969 children were born, 7.9% or 2,989 fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 4.2% lower in January, 8.6% lower in February–March, 12% lower in April–May and 2.6% lower in June than in the same periods of 2024.

The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.27 per female, compared with 1.36 a year earlier.

There were 64,616 deaths, 2.9% or 1,807 more than one year earlier. 7.8% more people died in January, 0.7% more in February, 7.2% more in March and 1.3% more in April–May, while 2.5% fewer people died in June than in the same months of the previous year.

Due to the balance of births and deaths, the natural decrease was 29,647, 19% more than the value of 24,851 for the same period of the previous year.

20,286 couples got married, 4.3% or 921 fewer than a year earlier. 4.4% less marriages were registered in January, 14% less in February, 3.9% less in March–April and 8.1% less in June, while 2.5% more marriages took place in May than in the corresponding months of 2024.

There were 7.4 live births and 13.7 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.6 per mille points lower, while that of deaths 0.5 per mille points higher than in January–June 2024. The rate of natural decrease increased by 1.1 per mille points to 6.3 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.2 per thousand live births, which was 0.8 per mille points lower than in the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 4.3 per mille, 0.2 per mille points lower than a year earlier.

The number of births declined in all regions compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest decreases occurred in Budapest, Western and Southern Transdanubia.

The number of deaths increased in all regions except for Pest Region compared with the same period of the previous year. The largest increase was in Northern Hungary, Budapest and Southern Transdanubia.

The rate of natural decrease increased in all regions. The increase was higher than the national average in the capital and Northern Hungary.

Among the regions, the number of marriages increased only in the Northern Great Plain and decreased in all other regions. The largest decreases occurred in Budapest and in Western Transdanubia.
