According to preliminary data, 6,172 children were born and 8,758 people died in September 2025. The number of births lessened by 8.3%, that of deaths by 12% while the number of marriages increased by 17% compared to the same month of the previous year.
In September 2025:
A total of 6,172 children were born, 8.3% or 559 fewer than in September 2024.
8,758 people lost their lives, 12% or 1,230 fewer than a year earlier.
The natural decrease was 2,586, as opposed to 3,257 in September 2024.
6,313 couples got married, 17% or 899 more than a year earlier.
In January–September 2025:
54,305 children were born, 6.8% or 3,964 fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 4.2% lower in January, 8.6% lower in February–March, 12% lower in April–May, 1.7% lower in June–July and 6.8 lower in August–September than in the same periods of 2024.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.32 per female, compared with 1.39 a year earlier.
There were 92,210 deaths, 1.9% or 1,775 less than one year earlier. 7.8% more people died in January, 0.7% more in February, 7.3% more in March and 1.2% more in April–June, while 13% fewer people died in July–September than in the same months of the previous year.
Due to the balance of births and deaths, the natural decrease was 37,905, 6.1% more than the value of 35,716 for the same period of the previous year.
37,288 couples got married, 2.4% or 906 fewer than a year earlier. 9.8% less marriages were registered in January–February, 3.9% less in March–April and 7.8% less in June–August, while 2.4% more marriages took place in May and 17% more in September than in the corresponding months of 2024.
There were 7.6 live births and 12.9 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.5 per mille points lower, while that of deaths 0.2 per mille points lower than in January–September 2024. The rate of natural decrease increased by 0.3 per mille points to 5.3 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 3.3 per thousand live births, which was 0.6 per mille points lower than in the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 5.2 per mille, 0.1 per mille points lower than a year earlier.

The number of births declined in all regions compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest decreases occurred in Budapest and Western Transdanubia.
The number of deaths fell in all regions except for Northern Hungary and Western Transdanubia, compared with the same period of the previous year. The largest decrease occurred in Pest Region, the Southern and Northern Great Plain.
The rate of natural decrease increased in all regions except for Pest Region and the Southern Great Plain. The growth was higher than the national average in the capital, Northern Hungary, Western and Central Transdanubia.
The number of marriages rose in half of the regions and fell in the other half. The largest increase was recorded in the Northern Great Plain, while the largest decrease occurred in Budapest.
