1.9 million participants in formal education
In the 2024/2025 school year, 1.9 million children and students participate in the different levels of initial, vocational and tertiary education in Hungary.
Of these, there are nearly 325 thousand kindergarten children, 715 thousand primary school students and 548 thousand secondary school students. A total of 2.6 thousand children with severe and multiple disabilities attend schools for severely disabled children. 329 thousand students continue their studies in tertiary educational institutions.
Compared to the previous school year, the number of kindergarten children as well as students in secondary schools and tertiary educational institutions increased, while that of students in primary schools decreased.
The number of full-time teachers and instructors in initial and vocational education has risen to nearly 148 thousand1, which is an increase of more than 2,300 compared to a year earlier. The number of teachers and lecturers working in tertiary educational institutions stands at almost 28 thousand, almost 500 more than a year earlier.
The number of students in full-time education, excluding primary education, increases
In the 2024/2025 school year, nearly 325 thousand children go to kindergarten, 1.3 thousand more than in the previous year. The number of full-time teachers exceeds 31 thousand this year, which means an increase of 600 in one year.
Compared to the previous year, 710 thousand people study in full-time primary school education, about 1.9 thousand fewer people. The number of full-time teachers is almost 900 more than a year earlier, currently at 73 thousand. This year, the national average number of students per teacher is 9.7.
In the full-time forms of secondary educational institutions, 429 thousand students continue their studies – 1,500 more than the previous year. There are 192 thousand students (44.8% of total students) in secondary general schools, almost 180 thousand (41.9%) in technicums and upper secondary vocational schools and 57 thousand (13.3%) in vocational training schools, vocational schools and special skills development schools. There are 43 thousand full-time teachers and instructors in secondary schools, almost 800 more than a year earlier.
The full-time form of tertiary educational institutions has 221 thousand students, 6.7 thousand more than a year earlier. More than 93% of students (207 thousand persons) attend tertiary undergraduate (BA/BSc), postgraduate (MA/MSc) or undivided training. Nearly 10 thousand students continue their studies in PhD (DLA) training and 4.7 thousand students attend tertiary level vocational training. Only 186 students participate in postgraduate specialisations.
Following the trend of earlier years, the number of foreign students kept increasing in 2024, too. Taking into consideration all levels of training, more than 43 thousand foreign students continue their studies in Hungary in the present academic year.
More participants in the part-time forms of primary, secondary and tertiary education
In the 2024/2025 school year nearly 231 thousand students participate in the part-time forms of initial, vocational and tertiary education, 13 thousand students more than in the previous school year.
There are 4.4 thousand students in primary schools – almost 10% more than a year earlier – and 119 thousand students in secondary educational institutions – 800 more than a year earlier – in part-time education.
107 thousand students – 12% persons more than a year earlier – continue their studies in part-time forms and distant learning in tertiary education. Most of them (100 thousand persons) participate in correspondence courses. There are 4.1 thousand distance learners and 2.9 thousand evening learners. The number of foreign students in part-time courses is nearly 2.5 thousand.
