Tourism satellite accounts, 2023

According to preliminary data, in 2023 the share of tourism-specific activities in the gross output of the national economy amounted to 6.3%, or 9.3% if multiplier effects are taken into account. The value added of the tourism sectors increased by almost a fifth, while the value of gross fixed capital formation invested in the sector decreased by 30% compared to a year earlier. Tourism demand grew significantly in 2023

Tourism expenditure by foreigners in Hungary amounted to HUF 3,029 billion in 2023, 38% more at current prices than in 2022.

In 2023, domestic tourism expenditure (HUF 1,075 billion) of the Hungarian population increased by more than a quarter compared to a year earlier. 79% of the expenditure was related to domestic trips and 21% to trips abroad. Hungarian tourism expenditure was thus HUF 4,104 billion, up 35% on a year earlier and 38% on 2019.

In 2023, tourism contributed 6.3% to national economic output

In 2023, the output of tourism-specific sectors was 10% higher in basic prices than in the previous year, at HUF 9,411 billion, with the rate of growth significantly outpacing the expansion of the national economy as a whole. Total intermediate consumption, i.e. the value of goods and services used in production, amounted to HUF 5,200 billion at market purchase prices, so the total value added of the tourism sectors was HUF 4,211 billion at basic prices.

In 2023, the share of tourism-specific activities in the gross output of the total national economy was 6.3%, or 9.3% if multiplier production effects are taken into account. The value added of tourism-related sectors accounted for 6.5 % of the total national economy and 9.5 % including the multiplier effect.

Tourism-related sectors accounted for almost one tenth of domestic employment

In 2023, 422 thousand people were employed in tourism-related sectors, only slightly changed from the previous year. The share of people employed in the tourism sectors in relation to the national economy as a whole was 9.1%, similar to a year earlier.

Overall, investment in tourism decreased in 2023

In 2023, gross fixed capital formation for tourism in the tourism sectors amounted to HUF 891 billion, 30% less at current prices than in 2022.
