Nearly 90% of passenger cars advertised on the used car market are worth less than HUF 10 million

Figure 1

In the domestic used car market in August 2025, 39.3% of the advertisements were for cars worth less than HUF 2.5 million, 26.6% for cars worth between HUF 2.5–5 million, 21.0% for cars worth between HUF 5–10 million and 13.1% for cars worth more than HUF 10 million. Compared to August 2024, the share of ads offering a car for less than HUF 2.5 million decreased by 2.8 percentage points, while the share of ads for between HUF 2.5 and 5 million increased by 0.6 percentage points. Compared to the same period last year, the share of ads between HUF 5-10 million increased by 1.8 percentage points, and the share of ads above HUF 10 million increased by more than 0.4 percentage points. Taking all ads into account, the average asking price was HUF 5,500,000 in August this year and HUF 5,300,000 in the same period of the previous year.

Petrol cars account for almost half of the used car market

Figure 2

According to advertisements on the internet market for second-hand cars in August, nearly 50% (51,340 units) of the cars offered were petrol cars and 40.8% (42,180 units) were diesel cars. Hybrid vehicles (petrol and diesel combined) accounted for 3.9% (4,080 units), electric for 5.3% (5,480 units) and other1 vehicles for 0.2% (260 units). Compared to August 2024, there were 1,620 fewer used cars available. Compared to the same period last year, the number of electric cars in the selection of Használtautó.hu increased by 35.0%, while that of cars with other types of propulsion increased by 4.0%. In addition, the number of petrol cars decreased by 2.3%, that of diesel cars by 4.0% and that of hybrid cars by 1.7%.

Diesel cars covered on average more than 40% more kilometres than petrol cars

Figure 3

There is a positive relationship between the age of used cars and the number of kilometres driven. In terms of mileage, there is a large difference between the two main fuel types. The average mileage of advertised petrol cars was 156,000 km and that of diesel cars 222,000 km, i.e. diesel cars covered 41.8% more kilometres than petrol cars. The average age of the petrol cars advertised was 14.1 years and that of the diesel cars 12.4 years. The number of kilometres driven by petrol and diesel cars advertised in August grew by 0.6% and 2.3% respectively compared to August 2024. The average age of petrol cars increased by 0.7% over a year, while the average age of diesel cars increased by 3.3%.

Hybrid cars are currently the most expensive on the used car market

Figure 4

Looking at the average price of used cars by drive system, we see that hybrid cars are currently the most expensive on the market (average price in August 2025: HUF 12,210,000), with a 3.1% increase in one year. In contrast, the price of electric vehicles has fallen by 5.2% in one year. The price of petrol and diesel cars changed at similar rates over the period under review, with average prices close to each other. Diesel cars were more expensive than petrol cars in the months observed, by 5.8% on average. Of the five categories observed, vehicles in the other categories were the cheapest.

The data for the month of August show that several factors influence the price of used cars.2

All other things being equal, a petrol car loses 6.9% of its value every year, while a diesel car loses 7.9%. The average annual price decrease is 8.0% for electric cars, 6.1% for hybrids and 5.8% for other passenger cars.

Every thousand kilometres driven reduces the price of a car by 0.2%.

While a 100 cc increase in displacement increases the value of a car by 3.3%, a 10 kW increase in power increases the value by 3.8%.

Compared to cars in normal condition, those in excellent condition are on average 24.7% more expensive, those in spared condition 12.5% more expensive, those in undamaged condition 22.7% more expensive and those in nearly new condition 27.7% more expensive than the benchmark. The price of damaged, faulty cars is on average 58.9% lower on the same benchmark.

Volkswagen brand cars remain the most frequently advertised

Figure 5

The ranking of the 10 most popular brands remained relatively stable during the period under review. Since January 2024, there has been a longer-term decline in the number of advertisements among brands, but a slight increase has been observed since January 2025. Volkswagen had the most ads in August, with more than 7,000, followed by BMW with approximately 6,500. There was a change between places 3 and 4: Ford overtook Opel in the last observation period, with both brands having more than 5,500 cases. They were followed by Mercedes-Benz with around 5,500 advertisements, and then Audi with over 4,500 cases. There was no change in the ranking of Škoda, Toyota and Renault, which brands were listed in August with between 2,700 and 3,600 advertisements. The last place saw a change, with Kia stepping into 10th place, displacing Peugeot. Both brands had an advertisement volume close to 2,200.

Figure 6

The age of the cars belonging to the 10 most popular brands has shown a slow but consistent increase during the observed period. Opel, Renault and Volkswagen have the oldest cars, with an average age of between 13–14 years in August. They are followed by Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota with 11.9–12.5 years. Based on the August data, the next three brands are clearly separated from each other by average age: Audi more than 11.5, BMW more than 11, and Škoda less than 10.5 years. The 10th most popular car brand, Kia, is also the youngest offering on Használtautó.hu with 9.3 years.

Figure 7

The average asking price of the 10 brands with the most used car ads on Használtautó.hu shows stability. The quality differences between the brands are clearly visible. The three large, German premium brands – Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi – lead the order in terms of average asking price by a wide margin. They are followed by more everyday brands: Kia, Toyota, Škoda and Volkswagen in a group around 4.5–5.2 million forints, Ford under 4,000,000 forints, and finally Renault and Opel in a group also under 3,000,000 forints.

Figure 8

Of the 10 most popular models advertised on Használtautó.hu in August, the Audi A6 had the highest average price (HUF 7,200,000) and the Suzuki Swift the lowest (HUF 1,600,000). In terms of age, the Kia Ceed was the youngest on average, at less than 8.8 years, and the Suzuki Swift the oldest, at around 17.9 years. For the 10 most common models, no correlation between average price and average age is observed between models this month.

Compared to the August 2024 ranking, there were 6 changes in the 10 most frequently advertised models in the same period of 2025, which is summarised in the table below:
