Motor fuel price statistics, March 2026

Based on data in the Weekly Oil Bulletin, published by the EU, and on price caps introduced in Hungary and effective from 10 March 20261, the average price of 95-octane petrol was 592 forints in Hungary in the month of March, which was 32 forints or 5.1% lower than the average of 624 forints for neighbouring countries. In countries in the region, the average price in March equalled 612 forints, the price in Hungary becoming 3.3% or 20 forints lower. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the average price of 95 petrol increased by 35 forints in Hungary. In parallel, the averages observed for neighbouring countries and for countries in the region rose, too, by 62 and 71 forints, respectively.

The monthly average price of diesel motor fuel was 617 forints in Hungary, which was 57 forints or 8.5% lower than the average of 674 forints for neighbouring countries. The average domestic price of diesel motor fuel was 53 forints or 7.9% lower than the regional average price of 670 forints. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the monthly diesel oil price level in Hungary increased by 40 forints. The average was up by 92 forints in neighbouring countries and by 113 forints in countries in the region compared to February values.

Out of the countries in the region, the average price of petrol in March was higher in every country except Slovenia and Bulgaria than in Hungary. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the average price increased the most, by 123 forints in Austria.

The average price of 95-octane petrol was 16.4% higher in Austria, 13.0% higher in Romania, 3–5% higher in Czechia, Croatia, Poland and Serbia and 0.3% higher in Slovakia than in Hungary. The average price of 95-octane petrol was less than 5% lower in Slovenia and more than 10% lower in Bulgaria than in Hungary.

The average price of diesel oil in March was higher in all countries except Bulgaria, Slovenia and Slovakia than the value for Hungary. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the average price of diesel increased in all countries in the region, and the largest growth of 201 forints was recorded for Austria.
