Motor fuel price statistics, May 2026

Based on data in the Weekly Oil Bulletin, published by the EU, and on price caps introduced in Hungary and effective from 10 March 20261, the average price of 95-octane petrol was 595 forints in Hungary in the month of May, which was 23 forints or 3.7% lower than the average of 618 forints for neighbouring countries. In countries in the region, the average price in May equalled 601 forints, the price in Hungary becoming 1.0% or 6 forints lower. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the average price of 95 petrol remained unchanged in Hungary due to the price cap. The average price observed for neighbouring countries was cut by 1 forint, while the monthly average price for countries in the region rose by 1 forint.

The monthly average price of diesel motor fuel was 615 forints in Hungary, which was 37 forints or 5.7% lower than the average of 652 forints for neighbouring countries. The average domestic price of diesel motor fuel was 19 forints or 3.0% lower than the regional average price of 634 forints. Compared to the figure for the previous month, the monthly diesel oil price level in Hungary was also unchanged, while the average went down by 39 forints in neighbouring countries and by 42 forints in countries in the region compared to April values.

Out of the countries in the region, the average price of petrol in May was higher in every country except Poland, Serbia and Bulgaria than in Hungary. Compared to the figure for the previous month, it increased the most, by 13 forints in Slovakia.

The average price of 95-octane petrol was 5–10% higher in Austria, Romania and Slovakia and 0–5% higher in Czechia, Croatia and Slovenia than in Hungary. It was 1.5% lower in Serbia, 9.1% lower in Bulgaria and 10.8% lower in Poland than in Hungary.

The average price of diesel oil in May was higher in all countries in the region except Czechia and Poland than the value for Hungary. Compared with the figure for the previous month, the average price of diesel remained unchanged in Hungary and Serbia, while it was down in the other countries in the region. The largest reduction of 65 forints was recorded for each of Austria and Czechia.
