Volume change in construction output in the member states of the European Union, August 2025
Released: 28 October 2025
The volume of construction output was 0.9% lower in the European Union than one month earlier, and it did not change considering the August 2024 value. Compared to the latter, based on available working day adjusted data1, production volume lessened in half of the member states, among these in the two decisive member states from construction output point of view, France and Germany; as well as in Hungary (–13.6%) and Poland (–4.9%) out of the Visegrad countries. In Czechia a 17.0% growth took place, in Slovakia 13.8%.
Construction performance lagged behind the one month earlier level by 11.4% in Hungary in August 2025, based on seasonally and working day adjusted data. Production volume was overall 1.3% lower in the first eight months of the year than one year earlier.
Production decreased in both main construction groups in August: by 2.3% in the construction of buildings, by 34.8% in civil engineering. (For instance, elements of transport infrastructure and complex industrial facilities belong to the latter.) A relapse was registered in all three divisions of construction, by 8.5% in the largest weight representing specialised construction, 7.3% in the construction of buildings, 41.2% in civil engineering. The volume of new contracts concluded rose more than twofold, increasing by 123.1% compared to the August 2024 data. The volume of the end of August stock of contracts at construction enterprises was 17.7% higher year-on-year, within it contracts for the construction of buildings lessened by 10.4%, those for civil engineering grew by 35.7%.
Based on the Euroconstruct estimate construction performance may increase annually in Hungary by 1.7% in 2025, while in the case of Germany, Italy and Austria analysts predict a decline.
