Volume change in construction output in the member states of the European Union, February 2025
Released: 24 April 2025
Construction output volume lessened by 0.4% in the European Union in February 2025, month-on-month, and was 0.3% higher compared to February 2024. As for the latter, based on available working day adjusted data 1, output volume grew in about half of the member states, in the two most decisive states however, France and Germany, - as in Hungary (-4.1%) -, a setback occurred. The rest of the Visegrad countries registered increases, Poland 0.6%, Czechia 0.9%, Slovakia 3.2%.
According to raw data in February 2025 construction performance in Hungary lagged behind the February of the previous year’ level by 4.5%2, and by 1.3% month-on-month, based on seasonally and working day adjusted data.
Changes in the output of the main construction groups took opposite directions year-on-year: the construction of buildings lessened by 11.0%, civil engineering works increased by 15.3%. (Transport infrastructure elements and complex industrial establishments are part, for example, of the latter). The scale of decrease was 10.9% in the largest weight representing – among the divisions of construction – specialised construction, 11.2% in the construction of buildings, in civil engineering, however, production volume grew by 44.0% compared to the one year earlier low base. The volume of new contracts concluded fell by 15.5%. The volume of the end-of-February stock of contracts at construction enterprises was 1.8% higher year-on-year, within it the volume for the construction of buildings was 6.9% lower, for civil engineering was 8.9% higher.
Based on the Euroconstruct estimate construction performance may increase annually in Hungary by 2.8% in 2025, by 4.3% in 2026. Besides, a larger growth is expected in the Visegrad countries than in the most of the older member states of the European Union; in France, Germany and Italy, however, a decline is expected in 2025, too.
