Volume change in industrial production in the Member States of the European Union, March 2026

In March 2026, the volume of industrial production in the European Union decreased by 1.0% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to calendar-adjusted data. In Germany, which accounts for the largest share of the EU’s industrial output, industrial production declined by 3.0%. However, industrial output was higher than a year earlier in the majority of member states, including France (+0.9%), Italy (+1.5%) and Spain (+2.0%), which also represent significant shares of the Union’s industrial production.

In Hungary, the volume of industrial production increased by 3.7% in March 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, based on calendar-adjusted data.1 Regarding the Visegrád countries, industrial output grew by 0.9% in Czechia and by 5.3% in Poland, while it decreased by 1.0% in Slovakia.

Compared with the previous month, industrial output expanded by 3.1% in Hungary and by 0.8% across the European Union. Among the member states, Denmark’s performance increased the most (+8.4%), while Belgium’s fell the most (–3.0%).

According to unadjusted data, the volume of industrial production in Hungary in March 2026 exceeded the level of a year earlier by 6.7%. The volume increased in the vast majority of manufacturing subsectors (by 1.7–21.9%), with the strongest growth recorded in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products. The volume of the manufacture of transport equipment, which accounts for 26% of total manufacturing output, rose by 3.7%. Output in the food industry, another major manufacturing subsector, also increased by 9.2% compared with the same period of the previous year. The manufacture of electrical equipment, which accounts for 8.9% of manufacturing output, exceeded the low base level of March 2025 by 11.4%.

According to the forecast of the Trading Economics2, Hungary’s industrial production is expected to grow by 2.8–3.5% year-on-year in each quarter between the second and fourth quarters of 2026.

Due to a methodological difference, the data on the change in the volume of industrial production included in the flash report Industry (second estimate) of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office may differ from those published by Eurostat. In Hungary, according to the domestic methodology, in March – in line with that published by Eurostat – the volume of industrial production adjusted for calendar effects increased by 3.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, and adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects by 3.1% compared to the previous month.
