László Ormai, economist and statistician, has died

László Ormai, economist, statistician, former staff member and head of department of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), multiple international and Hungarian champion table tennis coach, founder of the Statisztika PSC table tennis club, has passed away at the age of 92. László Ormai has made a significant contribution to the promotion of statistics through his work linking statistics and successful competitive sport.

László Ormai graduated from the University of Economics in 1954 and worked for the HCSO from that year until his retirement. He was responsible for the development of the data processing IT system based on personal computers, which encompassed the headquarters and regional directorates of the HCSO. In the early 1990s, he played a major role in providing HCSO with modern, state-of-the-art computing equipment.

He founded the HCSO women's table tennis section in 1958. Ten years later, the team had already won a national championship and in the following years won 25 international and 40 Hungarian titles. He coached the table tennis team until 1991. After his retirement, he was mainly involved in sporting affairs as President of the Statisztika Petőfi Sports Club.
