Checkmate

World War II was over, and Hungary tried to recover. Based on new foundations it was looking for the opportunity to be able to determine the changing future, thinking over traditional values. For this, such people were needed who could reform their field of specialisation in a creative manner, keeping the results achieved. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office, too, was to be headed by a new man, and dr. Dezső Elekes an old, well-tried statistician, who had faithfully served Hungarian statistics from 1918 was chosen to be this new man.

That really a creative man needed at the time, with a systematised mind was chosen is also well shown by the hobby of Dezső Elekes. Namely, the excellent statistician spent his free time on chess.
As an excellent chess player he was a successful member of the Hungarian team that won the world championship in 1952, where he gained 5.5 points in 6 games. The Hungarian Chesslife also commemorated him as one who was "considered a master-level tournament player".
We keep his memories as an excellent statistician and as a statistician playing chess excellently. Therefore the Dezső Elekes chess competition is a large sports event each year, where the elaborate cup has already been merited by many excellent chess players since 1968.
