Dr Áron Kincses, the President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), made a presentation titled Statistics in service of science at the opening ceremony of the Economic Studies Section of the 37th National Conference of Students’ Scholarly Circles, at the University of Miskolc on 28 April 2025.
The University of Miskolc hosted the Economic Studies Section of the National Conference of Students’ Scholarly Circles between 28 and 30 April 2025, at the opening ceremony of which Dr Áron Kincses, the President of HCSO, made a presentation on the interrelationship between statistics and science. The President expressed that statistics described the multi-dimensional economic, social and environmental reality in numbers to offer a point of reference for both the scientific community and market and policy decision-makers. The results of data-driven decisions based on the Office’s statistics will be included in later statistics, in this way a cycle based on interaction will be made.
Dr Áron Kincses said that 21st century technologies, for example artificial intelligence, which – among others – efficiently supports interconnecting data sources and preparing predictive models, were given a significant role in producing statistics. The prepared statistics are capable of spectacularly illustrating economic phenomena of key importance such as traffic at border crossing points or tourist arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments, not only in the form of data tables but also on interactive maps. Using the latest technological and methodological innovations, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office is committed to work for continuously developing its data processing and data analysis activities and for increasing their efficiency.
The National Conference of Students’ Scholarly Circles is the largest series of scientific events in higher education in Hungary, where the most outstanding university and college students in scientific life can present their researches and works of art. This year there was a record number of, 713 entries to the Economic Studies Section from 634 university students, who represented 38 institutions.
