Dr Áron Kincses, President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office handed over this year’s Fényes Elek Prizes, 04/07/2025

Dr Áron Kincses, President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) handed over this year’s Fényes Elek Prizes in recognition of outstanding achievements in statistics and IT sciences, to

  • Péter Benő Banai, Senior adviser of the Governor of the National Bank of Hungary, in recognition of his many decades long outstanding professional service in governmental financial statistics;
  • Dr János Pénzes, associate professor of the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Nature Sciences and Technology, Earth Sciences Institute, Department of Social Geography and Regional Development, in recognition for his regional analyses, area researches, as well as for his many years long remarkable support in methodological developments by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office;
  • Ferenc Vágujhelyi, under-secretary at the Ministry for National Economy, responsible for the management of the National Tax and Customs Administration, in recognition of his innovative activity and outstanding work in regard to the statistical use of administrative data and in decreasing enterprises’ burden, as well as in supporting artificial intelligence-based solutions.

The prizes have been handed over on 4 July 2025, at a ceremony held in the Fényes Elek Room of the main building of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.

Fényes Elek Award ceremony
The Fényes Elek Prize is a State Award founded in 2009, named after Elek Fényes (1807-1876), outstanding reform-era personality known for his work in the fields of economics, statistics and geography, pioneer of homeland studies in Hungary, and one of the first representatives of the Hungarian economic statistics. The State Award named after him is handed over by the President of the HCSO every year to professionals with outstanding achievements in the field of statistics. The aim of the prize is the recognition of the research activity in the field, especially of successes achieved in the effective practical use and development of statistics.
