Agricultural census - Survey of the apple, pear, peach and apricot plantations, 2012 - History

History of the orchard surveys in Hungary

In Hungary, the first fruit plantation survey was conducted in the frame of the 1895 survey followed by the next full scope survey in 1935. Meanwhile, the correction of outdated figures demanded the implementation of a fruit tree enumeration carried out in 1956-1959. Thereafter fruit trees were recorded only as part of agricultural censuses until the vineyard and orchard survey was implemented in 2001.

Following the 2001 full scope survey covering all fruit species and in accordance with the EU directives the Hungarian Central Statistical Office implemented a fruit plantation survey for four fruit species (apple, pear, peach and apricot) in the year 2007 and 2012. Based on results of the 2001 full scope survey and the information on new plantations planned for the period following 2001, a sample survey was carried out.
